INTRODUCTION
The HINKY PINKY GAME involves guessing pairs of rhyming words
such as "fat cat," "otter spotter" and "peeling ceiling" from def-
initions, formulas and clues.
For example, what would you call a baseball player who's re-
ceived a new contract after setting a strikeout record? It's a HINKY
PINKY -- that is, each word of the rhyming pair has two syllables.
If you guessed "richer pitcher," you've got the idea.
You may already have passed the time with this delightful and
challenging game. Now you may experience it in combination with the
power and versatility of the computer. This program will present you
with problems at three levels of difficulty, give you the hints you
need, provide you with a 6400-word rhyming dictionary, check your
spelling, and guide you as you write problems for others to solve.
STARTING THE PROGRAM
After inserting the diskette into the disk drive and turning on
the power, you will first see a screen giving you 5 options. We sug-
gest you begin by pressing "L" to see your legal rights and responsi-
bilities concerning the use of this program. Or you may press "P" to
see our marketing philosophy, "C" for instructions on how to copy the
program, "D" to print this documentation, or the SPACE BAR to start
the HINKY PINKY GAME.
The main MENU of the game offers the following choices:
1. How to Play
2. Play
3. Make Your Own
4. Exit/Credits
HOW TO PLAY
"How to Play" is a brief introduction to the Hinky Pinky Game,
explaining how the FORMULA and the DEFINITION help you guess the
rhyming pair. You might find it helpful to go through the "HOW TO
PLAY" section now, and then return to these instructions.
PLAY
You may choose any of three levels of problems written by us --
EASIER, HARDER, or HARDEST -- or a fourth set MADE BY OTHERS (if there
are any). We'll discuss PROBLEMS MADE BY OTHERS a bit later. You'll
see in the upper left-hand corner of the screen two pairs of brackets
with the cursor flashing in the left one. This is where you enter the
first of your two rhyming words. The SPACE BAR lets you move from one
bracket to the other. You may erase by using the left arrow key (<-).
Directly below the brackets is the FORMULA, which tells you how
many syllables are contained in each word of the rhyming pair you are
trying to guess. Each word of a HINK PINK, for example, contains one
syllable ("limp blimp," "bored horde"). A HINKY PINKY has two syl-
lables in each word ("larder ardor," "raucous caucus"). Other for-
mulas you'll encounter are HINKETY PINKETY ("blathering gathering"),
HINK PINKY ("court report"), HINKY PINK ("unspent cent"), and HINKY
PINKETY ("sweetest defeatist").
The DEFINITION always covers both words of the rhyming pair, but
it doesn't contain either word of the pair, nor any words derived from
either of them. For example, if one of the words is "seeker," the DEF-
INITION will not contain words like "seek", "seeking" or "sought."
As you begin play, you may:
- type in one or both words of the rhyming pair and press RETURN,
- press the "?" key for a hint,
- press CONTROL N for a new problem,
- press ESCAPE to return to the main MENU.
If one of the words you type is correct, its brackets will dis-
appear, and the computer will ask you to go on to the other word. If
both words are correct, you will be rewarded with graphics and sound
(CONTROL G turns the sound off or on), and you can try another problem.
If a correct answer is only slightly misspelled -- for example,
"leoperd" -- the computer will ask you if you mean "leopard," and ask
you to type in the correct spelling. If you type in a word which is
correct but in the wrong place, the computer will automatically put it
in the correct position. Thus, you won't be thrown off the track by
trivial errors, but they won't be ignored either. On an Apple II+, you
may capitalize a letter by pressing CONTROL S before the letter (sub-
sequent letters revert to lower case). But if you don't put in a cap-
ital where it's required, the computer will do it automatically.
If you press the "?" key, a clue will appear. This clue may be
another complete definition, but more often it will relate to only one
of the words of the rhyming pair. If you have not yet entered a cor-
rect word, the second press of the "?" key will show you a word which
rhymes with the words you're trying to guess. A third "?" will show
you a list of words which rhyme with the answer, including the correct
words themselves. Hints always relate to the word of the answer which
is still missing. Naturally, the fewer times you ask for a clue, the
better you'll feel in coming up with the solution.
To go to the next problem, hold down the CONTROL key and press N.
Or, you may repeat a problem you have just answered correctly by
pressing the left arrow key. You may return to the main MENU at any
time by pressing the ESCAPE key. From there you can (1) look at the
"How to Play" section again, (2) go to another level of problems, (3)
make your own problems, or (4) solve problems made by other players.
MAKE YOUR OWN PROBLEMS (on the FLIP SIDE)
After you select this option, you need to turn the disk over and
insert the FLIP SIDE. Then you will see on the screen a template for
writing problems. This template has five familiar sections:
(1) brackets for your rhyming pair
(2) FORMULA
(3) DEFINITION
(4) HINT
(5) RHYMING LIST
At the bottom of the screen you will see your choices -- (H)elp
and (1). If you wish, press (H)elp for a description of any of the
five sections of the template. If you choose (1), the cursor will move
to the left-hand bracket on line 1 of the screen, where you begin to
create your problem.
You may enter both of your rhyming words now and press RETURN,
or you may enter just one, press RETURN and then choose (5) to look
at the RHYMING LIST of words which rhyme with the word you entered.
After you've looked at this list, you need to press (1) again in order
to enter your second word. You may move from one bracket to the other
by pressing the SPACE BAR, or erase one character at a time with the
left arrow key (<--).
If the words you've entered are in the Rhyming Dictionary, but
don't rhyme with each other, the computer will tell you so. You may
always use words which are not in the Dictionary. If you do so, how-
ever, just remember that the computer won't be able to assist you
with rhymes or formulas.
After you've typed in your rhyming words, press (2) to enter the
FORMULA corresponding to the rhyming pair you have chosen. The FORMULA
will automatically be capitalized as you type it in. After you have
pressed RETURN, the number of syllables contained in each word of
your rhyming pair will appear in parentheses to the right of
the FORMULA. Should your FORMULA be incorrect, the computer will show
you how to correct it. Again, you may move from one word of the form-
ula to the other by pressing the SPACE BAR, and erase with the left
arrow key.
Once your FORMULA is correct, you may enter your DEFINITION by
pressing (3). The DEFINITION is limited to a total of 97 letters or
spaces. You won't be allowed to use the words of the rhyming pair in
your DEFINITION.
If you want to add a HINT after your DEFINITION has been com-
pleted, you may do so by pressing (4). The HINT is limited to a total
of 72 letters and spaces, and should also not contain either word of
the rhyming pair. This HINT may be another complete definition, or
may apply specifically to either of the rhyming words. It should not
be simply a word which rhymes with those of your word pair, since the
computer will supply a rhyming clue for you automatically.
You may save your problem by pressing "S" for "Save." You'll be
asked to enter your name or initials (up to five spaces). Later on,
you or other players will be able to call up your problems by name,
using CONTROL X (see next page).
RHYMING LIST
The RHYMING LISTS contain over 6400 words arranged in 1100
categories. Only nouns and adjectives are included. Each word in a
given category will combine with at least one other word in that cat-
egory to yield a definable rhyming pair, though not every word will
combine with every other word. It will take some thought to come up
with good combinations. Because of limitations imposed by the size of
the screen, no category may contain more than 33 words. A number of
proper names have been included, and you will undoubtedly be able to
think of many more to use. We have eliminated many words which are
archaic, technical or seldom encountered, and have avoided others
which may be objectionable. You, of course, have the option to use any
words you wish in the problems you create.
In the case of homographs -- that is, words which are spelled the
same but pronounced differently ("row," "sewer," "valise," etc.) --
only one of the homographs could be included. We couldn't teach the
computer to differentiate between them. For example, if a player
wanted to create a rhyming pair using "sewer," the RHYMING LIST would
show only words rhyming with "newer" and "bluer," not with "blower"
and "grower."
Words with differing syllable counts will rhyme with each other
as long as the rhyming syllables are the ones that receive primary
stress. "Heavy bee" doesn't work because of its stress pattern, but
"free degree" makes an excellent rhyme.
PROBLEMS MADE BY OTHER PLAYERS (on the FLIP SIDE)
This is the "same game" as the other problems (EASIER, HARDER,
HARDEST) except:
1. There is never more than one HINT.
2. Words used in these problems which are not contained in our Rhyming
Dictionary are marked with an asterisk (*) in the LISTS.
3. You may search for problems written by a specific player. Press
CONTROL X and type that player's name or initials.
4. You may delete any problem MADE BY OTHERS. First press CONTROL E
to display the complete problem. Then press "Y" if you want to delete
this problem. Any other key leaves it unchanged. Press CONTROL E
again, and you're back to solving PROBLEMS MADE BY OTHERS.

you the most recent version of the HINKY PINKY GAME on a red disk. We
will replace any defective disks purchased directly from us if you re-
turn the defective disk to us within 30 days after we mailed the disk
to you. Except for such replacement, The 22nd Avenue Wordshop dis-
claims all warranties, expressed or implied, for THE HINKY PINKY GAME.
THE HINKY PINKY GAME belongs to The 22nd Avenue Wordshop. You
may preview the program for one week. To use the program beyond the
end of the preview week, you must send a $25 license fee directly to
